Professional Development

Professional Development (PD) provided by The Conversation Tree:  Community-Based Language Partnerships aims to support community-based organizations and educational institutions interested in implementing the Conversation Café model.

Are you interested in intercultural exchange?  Would you like to provide support to adult language learners? Become a Conversation Facilitator!   We have opportunities for speakers of English, Spanish and Mandarin.

The series includes a primer of second language acquisition, strategies and techniques used in conversation facilitation, as well as an opportunity to serve as a Conversation Facilitator at tables with groups of 2 – 4 adult learners with the support of The Conversation Tree staff. A Certificate of Participation will be given to Conversation Facilitators who complete the 24 hours of Professional Development. We will be hosting a Professional Development series during the Summer of 2016 in partnership with the New Brunswick Free Public Library. More details can be found here.

In March 2014 and January 2016, The Conversation Tree partnered with Universidad Autonoma de Yucatán in Mérida, Mexico to provide a PD workshop for language educators.  Additionally, we facilitated several Conversation Cafés in a middle school, high school and at the university level.

In April 2014, we concluded our first PD series (22 hours) offered at Plainfield Public Library.  The PD included four components: an on-line self-paced module, an initial face-to-face preparation session, on-site support and debrief sessions, and session planning support.

Since Summer 2014, The Conversation Tree has partnered with New Brunswick Free Public Library (NBFPL) to offer 9-week Professional Development series. A total of 59 volunteers have participated and served as Conversation Facilitators in summer, fall, and spring Conversation Cafés.
